History

The Istrian Shorthaired Hound or officially called in its native country as the Istarski Kratkodlaki Gonič is an old scent hound breed that originates in Istria, Croatia. This breed and its closely related cousin, the Istrian Coarse-haired Hound are indigenous to Croatia and share the same history. Although subject to various debates and arguments, most breeders recognize that the Istrian Shorthaired Hounds together with its coarse-haired cousins are the oldest hound breeds that are native to the Balkans.

The Istrian Shorthaired Hound was created to be the local hunting dogs of the mountainous terrain that makes up the Istrian landscape. The breed is prized for its hunting skills when going after rabbits, hares, and foxes in rough mountain terrain.

Personality

The Istrian Shorthaired Hound is not a family pet but was bred to be natural mountain hunters of small game. This makes their temperament not suitable to be kept as household pets. It is one of the scent hound breeds that have a famous cry or bay, blowing out a sharp and persistent baying sound while hunting foxes and rabbits. Compared to the Coarse-haired variety, the Istrian Shorthaired Hound is more docile and very calm when around its human family. Out on the field, they are lively hunters that will display enthusiasm while on the hunt!

Istrian Shorthaired Hound was bred to be efficient scent hounds that go after foxes and rabbits in Istria’s mountainous terrain.

Environment

Istrian Shorthaired Hound is built for the hunt and lives for the outdoors! They are not city or apartment pets. These hunting dogs will do best in rural areas and homes with ample spaces where they can move about.

Grooming

Compared to their coarse-haired cousins, the Istrian Shorthaired Hound requires less attention when it comes to grooming. This dog is very easy to take care and brushing their coat regularly, but not extensively, will be sufficient.

Training

Istrian Shorthaired Hounds are fairly intelligent and will be moderately easy to train compared to the Istrian Coarse-haired hounds. These dogs will be more responsive if a positive training method is used.

Health

Istrian Shorthaired Hounds are generally healthy dogs and there are no specific health issues or genetic disorders that are documented to affect this breed.

Exercise

Istrian Shorthaired Hounds are very energetic dogs with great stamina. They require plenty of activities to satisfy this high activity requirement. Taking these dogs on brisk walks every day and ample time to run and have a good romp in a large yard that is securely fenced should be done.
