History

The modern-day Italian Greyhound has roots that can be traced back as far as 2,000 years ago. Similar looking dogs were known to have existed during the Middle Ages in the Southern regions of the European continent. During the renaissance period, their popularity rose in European nobility that started in Italy. A century later, English nobility followed suit. Since then, it has become very famous among European royalty and nobility. Spearheaded by the Empress and Autocrat of All the Russias Catherine the Great and then by Danish royalty Princess Anne of the Houses Bowes-Lyon and Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Originally they were bred as a companion, but some royal and noble sportsmen preferred them as hunting dogs for small games.

Personality

Years of being favored as companion dogs for the royalty, nobility, and aristocrats made these dogs somewhat needy. But they are also affection and playful. These dogs’ devotion to their owners is legendary as also they’re being aloof when around strangers. Their high intelligence makes them trainable but will be difficult because of their tendency to be stubborn.

Environment

The Italian Greyhound is considered to be good pets for people or families living in apartment buildings. Italian Greyhounds were not developed for cold climates and prefer warmer weather conditions. Rural homes that have a yard will make these dogs very happy and even-tempered!

Grooming

The Italian Greyhound is one of the easiest dogs to groom as it requires very little grooming attention. Italy’s greyhound dogs shed hair lightly and some do not shed hair at all!

Training

This greyhound breed should not be difficult to train. They are difficult to housebreak though.

Health

Italian Greyhounds should have annual visits to the vet even if they are in a healthy state. The reason for this is this breed are high risks to health problems like epileptic seizures, slipped stifles and are prone to fractures. They breed are also known to have PRA or Progressive Retinal Atrophy. Italian Greyhound is a hard dog when they reach adulthood. Puppies of this particular breed are fragile.

Exercise

Italian Greyhounds are active little companion dogs that need sufficient activities to satisfy their amazing energy level. Daily walks should be done!
