Introduction

Jagdterrier dogs go by various names. The official name of this German dog breed is Deutscher Jagdterrier. In Canada and the United States, they call these dogs as the German Hunting Terrier or Terrier, German Hunt Terrier.

History

Native to the country of Germany and considered one of the younger German dog breeds as well as in the entire dog universe, the Jagdterrier is the feisty and fiery youngster of the dog breed world. Developed just at the turn of the 20th Century, they were created to be true functioning hunting dogs of small to medium game. These dogs show excellence in hunting foxes, weasels, badgers and wild boars in Germany and some parts of Europe. Across the Atlantic, Canadians and American hunters used them for treeing dogs as they performed impressively when up against squirrels and raccoons. Today you will see these dogs hunt in packs together with hounds.

Personality

The Jagdterrier is a true hunter by heart, instinct, and behavior. They have this always fiery expression and a dominant stance. This matches their hard strong work drive. On the hunt, these dogs are thinking hunters. Fearless on any given situation, but clever and tough enough to get the job done. Intimidating they can be, Jagdterrier dogs are affable when it comes to family. But strangers should be cautious as these dogs will always be wary when new faces are around them. They can be a bit too aggressive to have as a family pet.

Bred For

In Europe, they are hunters of small to medium game such as wild boars, deer, foxes, and weasels. In North America, sportsmen find them as perfect treeing dogs, primarily for raccoons and squirrels.

Environment

These terrier dogs are not really apartment type of canine pets. These types of dogs also do not do great in the city. Rural areas with homes that have large yards are recommended.

Grooming

Their smooth, harsh and abundant coating is very easy to maintain and groom. These German dogs shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Proper and firm training should be done early. This breed can become willful and hard to manage when pack leadership or insufficient daily activity is not present.

Health

They are one of the healthiest of all German dog breeds. No known case of major or minor health issues affects this breed.

Exercise

This breed needs a great deal of exercise as they are hunting dogs by heart. If these German hunting dogs are kept as home pets, taking them on daily walks or jogging is a must to keep them well behaved and well balanced.
