Introduction

The Japanese Chin is also called the Japanese Spaniel or simply the Chin dog. Although they are called Japanese, these dogs are actually native to China. But it was in Japan that they were truly and seriously developed as purebred.

History

A Japanese dog breed that is not really a native of Japan, The Japanese Chin dogs can trace its origin in neighboring China. They were brought to the land of the rising sun as gifts from the Chinese Emperor. These dogs quickly won the heart of Japanese nobility as well as the ruling elite, the shoguns. The shoguns bred them like they were native to their land, developing various types and ranges. When the once hermit Japanese nation opened its doors to western trade in 1893, the world was introduced to a well developed purebred.

Personality

The Japanese Chin can be called as the elephant versions of the domesticated dog family for having a very excellent memory. It is also a dog that knows what it likes and what it does not. Although somewhat catlike at times, these dogs will get along with almost everyone. May it be children, other dogs, and animals as well as strangers. Overall, the Japanese Spaniels as some calls them are intelligent, mild-mannered and a bit too sensitive.

Bred For

Japanese Chin dogs were bred as companion pets for Japanese nobility. They were also used as gifts to foreign dignitaries.

Environment

The Japanese Chin is a good dog for apartment dwellers. These Japanese spaniels will do okay without a yard and are sensitive to temperature extremes.

Grooming

A few minutes each day will keep the coat looking beautiful. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

The Japanese Chin is so intelligent and obedient that breeders and trainers around the world are fond of them. These Japanese dogs can even be trained to do amusing tricks! Today, they are one of the easiest and fasted dogs to train.

Health

These Japanese spaniel breeds are prone to eye and respiratory health problems. These are dogs known to commonly have heat prostration and distemper. These Japanese dogs are also known to wheeze and snore loudly.

Exercise

Chin dogs in Japan do not require a great deal of exercise. However, these Asian dogs do need to be taken on a daily walk.
