History

The Japanese Spitz or Nihon Supittsu is a northern dog breed that originates in Japan sometime during the later part of the 1800s. Unlike most native Japanese dog breeds that have a well-documented breeding history, the Japanese Spitz’s ancestry is quite unclear. One famous but somewhat controversial theory is that these dogs are the descendants of the Samoyed dog breed.

Regardless, the Japanese Spitz became very popular across Japan during the 1950s. Also, it is one of the increasingly popular Japanese dog imports in North American and Europe.

Personality

Highly spirited, very intelligent and pleasingly playful are the most common traits that describe the personality of the Japanese Spitz. They may be little spitz-type dogs, but they are very bold and will match the watchdog capabilities of other larger dogs.

In addition, they are quick learners and will display absolute happiness during playtime especially if it involves showcasing the dog’s natural agility.
