History

One of the breeds developed by Crossville, Tennessee native Robert Kemmer together with his wife, the Kemmer Stock Hybrid Squirrel Dog are hunting dogs that were specifically created to be treeing dogs used to hunt squirrels. They specialize in squirrel hunting but are also great when used to tree raccoons. Unlike other hunting dog breeds that use specific senses to hunt, the Kemmer Stock Hybrid Squirrel Dogs are capable of using sight, hearing, and scenting to locate prey. They are breeds that were developed by crossing the feist and cur lines.

Personality

The Kemmer Stock Hybrid Squirrel Dog is a dog with impressively strong treeing and hunting instinct. They are also known to show impressive courage even when the hunted game is considered dangerous.

Bred For

Used and developed to specialize in treeing squirrels as well as raccoons.

Environment

They are natural hunting and treeing dogs that are not suited for city life and apartment types. They will thrive in rural areas with owners who will use them as hunting companions. But given a chance, these dogs will adapt to a home companion type of living.

Grooming

The Kemmer Stock Hybrid Squirrel Dogs are is effortless to groom. These dogs only need occasional combing and brushing to remove dead hair.

Training

These dogs are easily trained because of their natural treeing ability and are easily broken from chasing the non-target game. But when trained as family pets, they can be quite tough to housebreak. The key to this is to have regular human contact to have them respond better during training.

Health

This breed is relatively young and health problems are not that properly documented.

Exercise
