Introduction

The Kerry Blue Terrier or also known as the Irish Blue Terrier is Ireland’s national terrier! For a country that has produced several terrier purebreds that are favored all around the world since ancient times, that is a big accolade.

History

Ireland named them their national terrier, making the Kerry Blue Terrier or Irish Blue Terrier the top terrier dog breed. Their origins can be traced as far back as the 1700s in the Irish county of Kerry. Although historically noted as a breed developed some time during the 17th century, little is known of their early beginnings. Officially recognized as a distinct terrier breed during the 1800s, the Irish found them excellent hunters on various hunting situations. They were used to show great skills in hunting small game in all types of terrain as well as impressive skills as bird hunters. They can retrieve game fowls on both land and water! When not out on hunting trips, owners of these terrier dogs used them as livestock herders, showing competence in herding both sheep and cattle. Presently, a big number of Irish Blue Terriers are being used as police dogs!

Personality

The Kerry Blue Terrier is one of the most versatile terriers and hunting dog breeds. They are alert, very game and highly spirited. They are known to challenge the leadership, showing a strong will but these dogs do thrive as human companions. They are not aggressive but are considered dangerous around small prey-like animals.

They were developed and used as an all-around working and utility terrier who can hunt small games, retrieve prey, herd livestock, act as a property guardian and do police works. They are quickly becoming popular as family companion dogs.

Environment

Kerry Blues are dogs that are very good for apartment living conditions.

Grooming

These dogs are pretty high maintenance when it comes to their grooming needs. Kerries should be groomed regularly once every three weeks. Their coat may cause ear infections so a regular ear check-up should be done. These Irish terriers types shed little to no hair and is odorless.

Training

They need firm obedience training to avoid unwanted behavior. But training should be easy. These intelligent dogs are also capable of learning and performing tricks.

Health

Irish Blue Terriers are long live dogs that are generally healthy. Some lines are prone to certain diseases including autoimmune diseases, cancers, eye problems, and hip dysplasia. These dogs are also known to have luxating patellas, hypothyroidism, progressive neuronal abiotrophy, and skin cysts.

Exercise

The Kerry Blue is a sporty dog and should be owned by sportspeople who can take them on daily outdoor activities. Jogging and running with them is a deal. But for non-sporty types, Kerry Blue dogs will do just fine with long daily walks as long as they do it every day.
