Introduction

King Charles Toy Spaniel is one of four varieties of English Toy Spaniels recognized for centuries as different breeds but know treated as just varieties of coats for one dog breed.

The King Charles variety is the toy spaniel that has the black and tan markings. It is often mistaken for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel for having similar markings. The difference between these breeds are:

size – Cavaliers are 13 to 18 pounds on the average while King Charles is 8 to 14 pound;

facial features – Cavaliers have a higher set of ears and their skulls are flat, while King Charles has a dome-shaped skull

muzzle length – King Charles tend to have shorter muzzle length than the much pronounce muzzles of the Cavaliers.

History

King Charles Toy Spaniel dogs were named after King Charles I, the pioneering monarch who developed the breed. King CharlesToy Spaniels, together with Prince Charles, Blenheim, and Ruby Toy Spaniel dogs are four varieties of the English Toy Spaniel family which were considered as separate breeds up until the earlier part of the twentieth century. Purist breeders of this small companion breed still consider each variety as separate breeds, but officially and internationally, all four are generally called English Toy Spaniel dogs.

Personality

King Charles Toy Spaniels are dogs that are composed of nature, lovely, and affectionate dogs that are well-balanced companion pets that are friendly to everyone, children and other animals.

Bred For

Developed as companion dogs and hunting dogs for small game.

Environment

King Charles Toy Spaniels are good for apartment life. These dogs do not do well in very warm conditions.

Grooming

Their coat is moderately long, silky, and straight or slightly wavy, with feathering on the ears, feet, and back of the legs and tail demands high attention and maintenance. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

Training them would be moderately difficult, but these dogs are naturally bred to live life with rules, follow and limits to what they are allowed to do.

Health

King Charles Toy Spaniels may suffer from allergies, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, mitral valve disease, and syringomyelia.

Exercise

King Charles Toy Spaniels require daily walking sessions to keep them healthy.
