Introduction

The Kooikerhondje dog breed, also known as the Kooiker Dog, the Dutch Decoy Spaniel, Dutch Decoy Dog and the Small Dutch Waterfowl Dog is considered as one of the rarest dog breeds today.

History

Dog historians and experts date the origin of the Kooikerhondje dog breed during the early parts of the 16th Century. This Dutch dog breed was developed specifically as a tolling dog and to lure ducks into their master’s nets. When the duck population saw an alarming decrease, the Kooikerhondje dogs’ number also saw a decrease as they fell out of use in the Netherlands. They nearly hit extinction by the end of the Second World War. After the war, fans of the dog breed started a revival in Holland and today their numbers are up and the breed is reported to be thriving. Outside The Netherlands, these dogs are considered one of the rarest breeds.

Personality

The Kooikerhondje is sociable and full of life. These traits of the Dutch Decoy Spaniel also made them a bit too noisy when compared to other gun dogs. These Dutch dogs are also known to be very faithful and loving around family. When it comes to strangers, they will be wary.

Bred For

These Dutch spaniel types of dogs were bred to lure ducks into their master’s nets.

Environment

Kooikerhondje dogs can live in apartment type buildings only if their owners are active and will devote time to their activity needs. Ideally, these dogs require ample spays to move about and a large yard that is fenced safely will be perfect.

Grooming

Regular combing or brushing of the Kooikerhondje’s coat is needed for their grooming needs. This will help reduce the amount of hair that these dogs shed. Kooikerhondje is a dog that constantly shed.

Training

The Kooikerhondje is easy to train but it requires a distinct trainer. From the very start, they should know who is the master in order for them to be trained.

Health

The Kooikerhondje is one of few of the rarest dog breeds that are also plagued by various serious medical problems. These health issues included eye problems specifically cataracts, nervous system problems which often come in epileptic seizures and the Von Willebrand’s disease. These dogs are also commonly plagued with hereditary necrotizing myelopathy. Some lines of Kooikerhondje dogs are more prone to have luxating patellas.

Exercise

Kooikerhondje dogs require moderate to a high amounts of activity needs when it comes to exercise. They are natural hunting dogs and having outdoor activities should be done early. Long walks or jogging sessions with their owners should be done every day.
