Introduction

Labrador Retriever dogs are one, if not the most popular dog breed in the United States today. There are two types of Labrador Retrievers being bred today. They are The English and the American Labrador Retrievers.

History

The Labrador Retriever dog breed originates from Canada with roots traced back to England. Sometime in the middle 1800s these dogs were developed by using lineages of the Saint John’s Newfoundland dogs which were crossed with other English bred gun dogs. Due to their ancestry, these dogs were originally named St. John’s Dogs. Presently, these dogs are one of the most popular dogs in Northern America and various regions of Asia and Australia. They are still being used as retrieval hunting dogs but also perform well in various tasks especially when it comes to service work for the disabled, bomb and narcotic defections as well as for search and rescue operations.

Personality

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most ideal dogs to have as family pets for their admirable qualities. These dogs are passionate, social, and compliant. They love being around people and other animals, showing friendliness to everyone, especially with children. They are natural retrievers in the hunt and will display their fondness carrying various things using its mouth. The Labs are dogs that just adore water and would enjoy aquatic activities with their owners. They are also very faithful, amorous, loving and tolerant.

Bred For

Labradors were developed as retrieving dogs for hunting. Today they are used in various service-related work including companions for the disabled, search and rescues as well as detection for police enforcement.

Environment

Labrador Retrievers are very adaptable dogs. City living and apartment living conditions will be just fine with these dogs provided that their exercise needs will be met. An ideal home for them would be a family with a large yard for them to move around and play.

Grooming

Labs are dogs that shed their fur in average amounts. Their coat is pretty easy to groom and does not require too much attention.

Training

These dogs are one of the most highly trainable dog breeds in the world for their intelligence, tolerance and adaptability to learn.

Health

Labrador Retrievers, although considered as generally healthy may experience medical issues from hip and elbow dysplasia to various arthritis-related health problems. They are also prone to eye conditions and disorders including PRA and developing mast cell tumors.
