Adopt a Lhasa Apso, Dog Breed Guide

Introduction

The Lhasa Apso is considered today as one of the longest-lived dogs with some dogs reaching a full 18 years. For so many centuries, these dogs are the prized dogs of Tibet. They were so loved in their native country that Lhasa Apso dogs are not sold in pet shops or by breeders. These Tibetan dogs were only given gifts to people who were close and respected by the Dalai Lama. In the year 1933, the pair of Lhasa Apso dogs reached the Northern American continent. The 13th Dalai Lama gave this pair of dogs to New Jersey residents Mr. And Mrs. Suydam.

History

There are three native dog breeds that serve as companion dogs in Tibet. The Lhasa Apso is one of these dog breeds. These Tibetan dogs’ origin can be traced back as far as several hundred. They were specifically bred by Tibetan monks to help guard their temples and monasteries against wanderers, intruders, and thieves. They are dogs that are so highly regarded in Tibet that there was a time Lhasa Apso was only given to people hand-picked by the Dalai Lama himself!

Personality

The Lhasa Apso is a companion dog famous for having high intelligence. They are natural watchdogs as they were originally bred by monks to guard Buddhist temples. That doesn’t mean that Lhasa Apsos are not friendly. They will show affection when around friends and family. When around strangers, their natural watchdogs take over and will display wariness. They may be friendly, but these Tibetan dogs are known to be uncomfortable when around young children.

Bred For

Tibetan monks bred these small dogs as companions. They were also trained to be watchdogs in monasteries and temples. These dogs are also used as gifts to esteemed visitors of the Dalai Lama.

Environment

Lhasa Apsos are companions and these are dogs that are perfect for apartments and condominiums.

Grooming

The Lhasa Apso dog breed is relatively low maintenance when it comes to their grooming needs. These dogs do not need to be trimmed nor stripped. Grooming time is fast and relatively easy to do. Checking their eyes and ears should be done regularly. These small dogs shed hair in very little amounts.

Training

Special attention should be given as these dogs tend to be “prima donnas”, making them pretty difficult to train, but this is doable.

Health

Lhasa Apso dogs are known to be very healthy. There are some medical conditions that affect some of these Tibetan dogs including eye conditions including problems of the kidney, eyesight, and skin-related diseases. Hip dysplasia is rare for these dogs, but they do happen.

Exercise

Lhasa Apsos are dogs that should be taken on walks every day. If this is not feasible, having areas for these dogs to play will be sufficient to satisfy their energy needs.
