Introduction
The Long-haired Lurcher dog is a type of Lurchers with longer and somewhat rough-textured coats, unlike the short-haired Lurcher. This Lurcher type dog breed is one of two varieties of the modern Lurcher dog breed.

History
The Long-haired Lurcher is a variety of Lurcher dog that originates from various regions of the United Kingdom, specifically Ireland and England. The ethnic Romanichals, a sub-group of the Romani people, breed, develop and use these dogs.
During the times that hunting game was only exclusive for the British landed elite and aristocrats, people like the Romanichals were not allowed to use traditional hound breeds to hunt. It was even illegal for people does not belong to the landed class to hunt or poach. The Romanichals bred and used these dogs for poaching rabbits, hares and various other small games. They are also famous for being used in hare coursing by different ethnic groups that are generally called gypsies.
This type of dog got its name from the Romani word Lur, which translates to “Thief” in English. The most common crosses to produce Short-haired and Long-haired Lurcher dogs are Greyhound and Collies as well as Greyhound and Terriers. Today, Long-haired Lurcher dogs are somewhat rare in Wales, Scotland, and England primarily because hare coursing is illegal in these parts of the United Kingdom. It is common in Northern Ireland as hare coursing is still legal in this part of the British Isles.
Personality
Long-haired Lurchers may not be purebreds, but they are still very lovable, fun-loving and affectionate dogs. They are known to thrive under the guidance and leadership of their masters. The Short-haired and Long-haired Lurcher dogs were bred and used for hunting and poaching hares, rabbits and other small-sized games. They are impressive as hare coursing dogs, naturally gifted with speed and agility. Overall, Longhaired Lurcher dogs are obedient, amenable and gentle dogs.
Bred For
Lurcher dogs are the hunting and poaching dogs of various ethnic groups generally called gypsies. The first to develop this type of dog was the Romanichals of the United Kingdom.
Environment
Long-haired Lurcher dogs are not suitable for the city. They are not good to have as apartment pets. These dogs are highly energetic, and a rural or suburban area is the perfect place for them to stay.
Grooming
Long-haired and Short-haired Lurcher dogs require regular brushing and combing of their coats. Long-haired Lurchers constantly shed while Short-haired varieties shed hair in average amounts.
Training
Long-haired Lurcher dogs are good students and very obedient during training. They are also fast learners, making them very easy to train.
Health
The medical history of this breed is not well documented.
Exercise
Long-Haired Lurcher dogs are sighthounds; hence it is advisable to take them to a walk at least once a day. They are the type of dog that needs ample time to run freely. These dogs are naturally fast and have a strong drive to chase and kill prey-like animals. It is better off to have them run and play in a safely enclosed area as possible.
