Introduction

The National Rat Terrier Association recognizes two body types of the Rat Terrier Breed. The Class A or Long-legged Rat Terrier has square bodies and longer legs. The Class B or Short-legged Rat Terrier have shorter leg length in proportion to their long bodies

History

There are two body types, called Classes, of Rat Terriers that have evolved. The two classes are distinguished by the length of their legs. The two classes share the same traits, personality and skills of the original Rat Terrier dog breed.

Long-legged Rat Terriers or officially called Class A Rat Terriers recognized by the National Rat Terriers Association. It is one of two body types of the Rat Terrier breeds. The Class A or Long-legged Rat Terriers should have height measurements that are approximately the same to the length measured from the ground to withers and from the point of shoulder to rump. The length should not exceed 1 ½” from the height. This standard goes with all recognized size varieties from the Standard, Miniature and the Toy Rat Terrier variants.

Personality

Long-legged Rat Terriers are known to be intelligent dogs that will be curious and highly energetic all the time. These dogs are very game and known to have remarkable tenacity during the hunt. When at home, and around family, Long-legged Rat Terriers will be affable and shall display affection. Having children, other dogs, as well as cats around these dogs, will be no problem as they are known to get along with everyone.

The Long-Legged Rat Terrier dog breed was developed to be used in hunting trips, companion dogs, family pets as well as tasks that are considered as terrier work.

Environment

Class A Rat Terriers, in general, will do okay as apartment dogs provided their owners sufficiently satisfy their activity requirements. Toy and Miniature Rat Terriers are suited for residential building living conditions. The Standard Rat Terrier is great for suburban homes. The Decker Giant Rat Terriers will be suited in rural areas where there is enough space to move about.

Grooming

All the varieties of the Rat Terrier dog breed are very easy to groom and will require minimal attention in doing so.

Training

Class A Rat Terriers are famous for their eagerness to please disposition. They are quick to learn and adapt, making these dogs very easy and enjoyable to train!

Health

The Long-legged Rat Terrier dog breed is known to be at high risk of developing hip and elbow dysplasia and luxating patellas. These dogs are also at high risk of acquiring mange and allergies. They are dogs that are common to have under or overbites.

Exercise

All the varieties of Rat Terriers require a pretty good amount of activity to satisfy their energy needs. Rat terrier dogs should be taken on long walks or jogging every day. Owners are advised to devote at least 30 minutes every day to exercise their dogs. Rat terriers will love outdoor activities and challenging games that will test their mental and physical strengths.
