Introduction

Longhaired Portuguese Water Dog is one of two varieties of the Cao de Agua of Portugal. In Portuguese, this variety is called the Cão de Água Pelo Ondulado. They share all the same similar standards and temperament with the other variety of this breed called the Cão de Água Pelo Encaradolado. The only difference is the texture and style of their coats.

History

There are two types of the Portuguese Water dog breed. The Cao de Agua Pelo Ondulado is the longhaired variety. These dogs are considered centuries-old and one of the oldest working dogs in Europe that were specifically bred and kept as a fisherman’s working companion. They are excellent swimmers that worked as fish gatherers, herders and catchers. These varieties were also used as retrievers on fishing boats. They can retrieve fishing nets and lines and all sorts of stuff that needed to be retrieved back on-board. These dogs were also used as aquatic messengers, delivering parcels and messages from one boat to another.

Personality

The Longhaired Portuguese Water Dog is an aquatic working dog breed that is known to be smart and obedient. These dogs are well-known for their remarkable endurance and energy. They are also dogs known for displaying incredible devotion towards the family. They were named Cao de Agua for nothing! These dogs just lives to work and play in the water! They are one of the most impressive swimmers in the entire dog universe! All in all, the Portuguese Water dogs are brave and loyal and always high spirited.

Bred For

The Cao de Agua Pelo Ondulado is a dog breed developed as a fisherman’s working companion. They were also used as fish herders and catchers, aquatic retrievers, boat messengers and guard dogs of boats at the port.

Environment

The Longhaired Portuguese Water Dog should be good to keep as apartment pets provided that their owners sufficiently satisfy their energy needs.

Grooming

The Longhaired Portuguese Water dogs require regular grooming attention. Their long coats should be brushed and combed at least once a week. They are dogs that shed hair in little amounts to none at all.

Training

Longhaired Portuguese Water Dogs are highly intelligent and highly trainable, especially when it comes to water-based lessons!

Health

The two varieties of the Portuguese Water Dog breed are known to be fairly healthy dog breed. Hip dysplasia and PRA or progressive retinal atrophy may commonly occur on some lines of this Portuguese dog breed. These dogs are also known to be plagued by a fatal nerve affecting a disease known as GM-1 Storage Disease.

Longhaired Portuguese Water Dogs are very active and very energetic! They are dogs that should be given a job. The Longhaired Portuguese Water Dog should be taken on long and brisk walks every day.
