History

The Lowchen is one of many dog breed originating in the country of Germany. Their historical accounts can be traced back during the middle part of the 15th century. There is a debate regarding their official area of origin. Most believe that these dogs are native to Germany. Other dog historians state that these are dogs with roots in the areas around the Mediterranean sea. Regardless of their debatable area of origin, the Lowchen dogs are known to be a distinct dog breed for almost four centuries now. These dogs got their name their traditional lion cut, earning the name little lion which is Lowchen in the German language. It became very popular within the women of the European nobility during the Renaissance. These dogs served as the preferred companions of the women of the landed elite.

Personality

The Lowchen is a good companion dog by nature. They are outgoing and perfect travel mates. These dogs show affection and will get along with the majority of the people. These include friends of their owners, children as well as other animals. They are very keen and display impressive intelligence. Males of this breed are known to be dog-aggressive to other male dog breeds.

Bred For

These German dogs were used as companions. Women of nobility preferred them for being perfect traveling companions and as foot warmers!

Environment

The Löwchen dogs are ideal apartment pets to have. These dogs prefer life indoors and would show high levels of energy and activity.

Grooming

These are dogs that require minimal but regular grooming attention. Special attention should be done to remove dead hair. They are dogs that shed very little and some lines do not shed hair at all!

Lowchen dogs are very easy to train! Their eagerness to learn and adaptability to learn quickly makes them one of the highly trainable companion dog breeds today.

Health

These German companion dogs are known to be a very healthy dog breed. There lines of Lowchen that are prone to patellar luxation but aside from that, there is no other alarming medical condition plaguing them.
