Introduction

The Lucas Terrier got its name from its original creator, the 4th Baronet Sir Jocelyn Lucas, KBE, MC. Sir Lucas developed this dog breed to create a more compact but still efficient version of the Ilmer Sealyham Terriers.

History

The Lucas Terrier is a dog breed belonging to the terrier dog group which originates in Great Britain sometime during the later part of the 1940s. This breed was named in honor of its pioneer breeder and creator, Major Sir Jocelyn Morton Lucas, 4th Baronet, Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Military Cross and a former Member of Parliament. The 4th Baronet bred lines of Sealyham Terriers that was called Ilmer Sealyhams. These were the working type of Sealyham dogs. Sir Lucas wanted a smaller Ilmer Sealyham and felt that it would be more efficient as workers. To produce the desired result, he crosses his Ilmer Sealyham dogs with the Norfolk Terrier. Today, all the Lucas Terriers that are breed within the United Kingdom can trace their roots back to the 4th Baronet’s original Ilmer Sealyham lines.

It is considered as one of the rare dog breeds in the world today, with only less than 100 registered in the United States and less than 1,000 in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Personality

Lucas Terriers are sweet terriers and considered not as exaggerated in temperament compared to the other British Terriers. This highly and easily trained dogs are very smart, eager to please and will be friendly towards people, children and other dogs. Unlike most terriers, the Lucas Terrier is not a vocal dog, it rarely barks. They do love to dig like their other terrier cousins.

Bred For

The Lucas Terrier dog breed was created to be the smaller and more efficient version of the Ilmer Sealyham Terriers.

Environment

Lucas Terriers will be good to have as apartment dogs. They can live in all types of living conditions.

Grooming

Lucas Terriers require grooming attention once a week. These are dogs that shed hair in little amounts or none at all. The Lucas Terriers emit very low doggy-odor.

Training

Lucas Terriers are very smart dogs and famous for being very easy to train.

Health

The Lucas Terrier is a very long-lived dog breed that is not plagued by alarming medical conditions that are common to other terriers their size. The breed is generally healthy.

Exercise

The Lucas Terrier is a small energetic dog. This breed should be taken out for walks every day. The rest of its exercise requirements will be sufficiently satisfied if these dogs are given ample time to play.
