Introduction

A Lurcher dog or the Norfolk Lurcher is not considered as a purebred dog. These dogs are wearing a short-haired coat and a smooth undercoat. As a result, their coat becomes thicker during the winter. However, there is also a longhaired variety.

Their name comes from the word ‘lurch’ which is connected with their ability to strike their prey. In addition, one more story about this breed’s name exists. The Lurcher got its name from the Romani word ‘Lur’, which translates to “Thief” in English.

Overall, there are two types of Lurcher dogs:

• The Long-Haired Lurchers, these are the dogs with longer coats;
• The Short-Haired Lurchers, dogs with shorter and finer coats.

History

The Lurcher is a type of dog that originates from various regions of the United Kingdom, specifically Ireland and England. They were bred, developed and used by the ethnic Romanichals that is a sub-group of the Romani people.

During the times that hunting game was only exclusive for the British landed elite and aristocrats, people like the Romanichals were not allowed to use traditional hound breeds to hunt. Nevertheless, it was even illegal for people does not belong to the landed class to hunt or poach. Therefore, the Romanichals bred and used these dogs for poaching rabbits, hares and various other small games. They are also famous for being used in hare coursing by various ethnic groups that are generally called gypsies.

The most common crosses to produce Lurcher dogs are Greyhound and Collies as well as Greyhound and Terriers. Today, Lurcher dogs are somewhat rare in Wales, Scotland, and England primarily because hare coursing is illegal in these parts of the United Kingdom. However, it is common in Northern Ireland as hare coursing is still legal in this part of the British Isles.

Personality

Lurchers may not be purebreds, but they are still very lovable, fun-loving and affectionate dogs. They are known to thrive under the guidance and leadership of their masters. The Lurcher was bred and used for hunting and poaching hares, rabbits and other small-sized games. They are impressive as hare coursing dogs, naturally gifted with speed and agility. Overall, Lurcher dogs are obedient, amenable and gentle dogs.

Also, they are very kind to children and gentle with other people which makes them perfect as companion dogs.

Bred For

Lurcher dogs are the hunting and poaching dogs of various ethnic groups generally called gypsies. The first to develop this type of dog was the Romanichals of the United Kingdom.

Environment

Lurcher dogs are not suitable for the city. Why? Because they are high-energy dogs. Also, they won’t adapt to the apartment lifestyle. Because of their high level of energy, they should be kept in rural or suburban areas with big open spaces.

Grooming

Longhaired and Short-haired Lurcher dogs require regular brushing and combing of their coats. Longhaired Lurchers constantly shed while Short-haired varieties shed hair in average amounts. Therefore, grooming should be done weekly to keep their coat shiny and healthy. As for the baths, they should be done two or three times a month.

Training

Lurcher dogs are very good students and extremely obedient during training. Since they are very active and intelligent, they will make the training time fly by.

As for any larger breed, early training and socialization are very important. However, Lurchers are not aggressive or overprotective dogs. They get along with other dogs and pets very well. Therefore, they are perfect for big families that already have a pet.

Health

Lurcher dogs are not considered purebred and their medical history is not well documented.

Exercise

Lurcher dogs are sighthounds that require to go out for walks at least once a day. This type of dog should also have sufficient time to run freely. Also, it is recommended to have them run and play in a safely enclosed area as these dogs are naturally fast and have a strong drive to chase and kill prey-like animals.
