Introduction

This is a breed that has gained a nickname of being The King of The Toy Dog Breeds! The Miniature Pinscher is very talented showing impressive skills in competitive obedience trials as well as competitions for watchdogs and agility trials.

This breed is called the Zwergpinscherin its native country of Germany. It is fondly called as the Mini Pin across the United States and Canada.

Date – Predates the Doberman Pinscher by half a decade

History

The Miniature Pinscher is commonly believed as bred-down versions of the Doberman Pinschers. In fact, the Mini Pin is not even related to the Doberman dog breed and predates the larger pinscher type by more than a hundred years. The modern Mini Pin dogs started being bred as purebred in the year 1895 by crossing Dachshunds or Italian Greyhounds to the local German Pinscher variety. They were created to be efficient small ratting dogs.

Personality

The Miniature Pinscher is famous for being the King of Toy Dogs for displaying impressive alertness, vigor and is very spirited. These are small ratting dogs that will display self-confidence and fearlessness while on the job. The Mini Pin is known to be wary around strangers and will be dog-aggressive as well. They are dogs known to react when provoked!

Bred For

The Miniature Pinscher dog breed was created to be barnyard ratters to control the rodent population.

Environment

The Miniature Pinscher will be good apartment dogs. Indoors, these Mini Pins will be very active.

Grooming

The Miniature Pinscher is very easy to groom and requires little attention in maintaining their coats. They are dogs that will shed hair in average amounts.

Training

The Miniature Pinscher can be well trained. They are not to be treated to be your typical toy dogs. These dogs will require plenty of work and exercise.

Health

These small dogs are known to be generally healthy as a dog breed. Various medical problems have been seen on Mini Pinschers including heart-related health issues, thyroid problems, luxating patellas, Legg-Perthes disease, epilepsy and cervical disc. They are also known to develop hip dysplasia.
