The Miniature Rat Terrier is a variety of the Rat Terrier dog breed made famous by US President and Icon Teddy Roosevelt. Both the United Kennel Club and The National Rat Terrier Association and all of their affiliates recognize the Miniature variety of this terrier-type breed.

History

The Miniature Rat Terrier originated in the United States sometime during the 20th century. These dogs were originally used as ratters and also bred to be blood sport ratters, a form of entertainment during that era. They were created not just to be ratters, but also as a multipurpose farm dog. The modern-day Miniature Rat Terrier dog is a product of various cross-breeding using several terrier and hunting dog breeds that underwent several stages of re-breeding throughout the 20th century. Personality

Miniature Rat Terriers are versatile dogs known to be excellent hunting companions, great family pets and friendly towards everybody. They are curious dogs that possess impressive intelligence and eagerness to pleas. These very active dogs are also impressive when out on the field. They hunt with amazing gameness and tenacity. Affection is also a trait of the Mid-Sized Rat Terrier.

Environment

The Rat Terrier dog breed is known to be at high risk of developing hip and elbow dysplasia and luxating patellas. These dogs are also at high risk of acquiring mange and allergies. They are dogs that are common to have under or overbites.

Exercise

All the varieties of Rat Terriers require a pretty good amount of activity to satisfy their energy needs. Rat terrier dogs should be taken on long walks or jogging every day. Owners are advised to devote at least 30 minutes every day to exercise their dogs. Rat terriers will love outdoor activities and challenging games that will test their mental and physical strengths.
