History

The modern Norwegian Buhund can trace its origins during the Middle Ages where farmers kept and bred Buhund-like dogs to be an all and multi-purpose farm dog that can herd and guard livestock as well as be a perfect farm companion. These Buhund-like farm dogs are believed to be the ancestors of the contemporary Norwegian Buhund dog breed. At the turn of the 20th century, Norway’s west coast region experienced an economic boom in its sheep farming industry. This is the time the Norwegian Buhund’s official breed program was created. The purpose of the farmers who bred these dogs was to produce the best herding dog that can work the terrain of Norway’s western coast. They used the best breedable spitzes local to their area to produce the Norwegian Sheepdog breed that we know today.

Personality

Lively and very noisy! That is the trademark trait of the Buhund. This lively dog is known to display a very high drive to work. It is also known to have a very high level of intelligence. These are northern dogs and will show its best traits when in cool climates.

Bred For

This spitz-type breed of Norway is a sheepdog that was bred to guard livestock as well as hunt game. Today they are used as service dogs, trained to be useful companions for the disabled and handicapped. They are also trained for police work. A Norwegian Buhund is also trainable for obedience and agility trials.

Environment

The Norwegian Buhund is not an apartment type of dog. They will not do well in the city. The ideal home settings for these spitz dogs are rural or suburban areas with small but fenced yards.

Grooming

The Buhund is a dog breed that is known to shed hair in heavy amounts. They shed hair every season. Fortunately, their short coat is very easy to groom.

Training

The Norwegian Buhund dog breed is naturally hardworking. Their high intelligence match with their very strong desire to please their masters makes them one of the most highly trainable dogs in the world. Among all the dogs belonging to the spitz dog group, the Buhunds are the easiest to train!

Health

This spitz type of dog breed is known to suffer medical issues including eye problems, commonly cataracts, hip dysplasia and even epileptic seizures.

Exercise

Norwegian Buhunds are working dogs that are very active and very lively. Taking these dogs on long and brisk walks every day should be done!
