History

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever originates during the early 19th century in Nova Scotia’s Yarmouth County. The specific lineages to produce this breed are not clear. Most dog historians and experts believe that they are the descendants of the decoy dogs that European settlers brought when they settled the region of Nova Scotia. There are traces of spaniel, retriever, setter and collie lineages in the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever’s bloodlines. There were used to toll ducks.

They are also a multi-purpose utility dog that can work as water retrievers, decoy dogs, guard dogs as well as companion pets. This dog breed is gaining popularity outside Canada in a recent couple of decades.
