Introduction

Podengo Portugueso Grande or Large Portuguese Podengos are the largest of the three Podengo Portugueso sizes. It is available in two coat types:

• The Smooth-Haired Podengo Portugueso Grande, armed with a rough coat that functions as a protective coat that has proven to be effective when hunting wild boar.

• The Wire-haired Podengo Portugueso Grande, with a dense and smooth single layer coat that also serves to protect them from wild boars.

History

Smooth Haired Podengo Portugueso Grande can trace its origins as far back the 5th century while the Wire-haired variety is very young, as it was started being developed just in the 20th century. Both coat types of Podengo Portugueso Grande are native to Portugal.

The Grande is the original and prototype Podengo where the Medio and Pequeno were bred from. They were originally developed to hunt deer and wild boar. The Grande is capable of tiring out their prey and will hold their catch until the hunter is near enough to make the shot. The Grande is the rarest of all the Podengo breeds, so rare that they are also rare in their native country.

Personality

Podengo Grande is hardy and tough as they are intelligent and observant. These are efficient hunting dogs of wild boar that is capable of swiftly attacking and capturing their prey. They are great guardians of home and property. This is a dog breed known to be voracious diggers.

Bred For

The Portuguese Podengo Grande was bred to specialize in hunting wild boars. They capable of tiring out their prey and holding them until the hunter can take the shot.

Environment

Podengo Portugueso Grande is a dog that should not be kept as apartment pets. These dogs will enjoy living in areas that have hot and sunny weather conditions.

Grooming

Podengo Grande is a low maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. Both coat types of each size variety naturally shed dust and dirt, drying their coat quickly and making them very efficient self-cleaning dogs! These are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Podengo Grande can be well trained provided they are trained using a fair and firm method. This podengo variety should have a dominant trainer that can earn the dog’s respect.
