Introduction

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog or Owczarek Nizinny in Polish is a dog breed originally created to be herders. Today, this sheepdog breed is also prized as athletes proving themselves in agility competitions, obedience and herding trials.

History

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is likely descended from a cross between the Hun Herding dog and the Puli that dates to the 13th Century. It was developed over several centuries to be an independent, adaptable sheepherder. Several examples were brought to Scotland in 1514 and are believed to be the ancestors of the Bearded Collie. The breed was close to extinction after both world wars with only eight breed worthy dogs left after World War II. It was redeveloped by breeders and is mostly a companion dog today.

Personality

The Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are sharp and very independent. They are dogs that will be affectionate and show devotion towards their family and friends. These dogs are wary of strangers. All in all the Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a well-balanced breed that is serious on the job and responsible around family.

Bred For

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs were bred to be herders. Today they are also trained to compete in agility, competitive obedience and herding trials. These dogs are also trained to do tricks. Some Polish Lowland Sheepdogs serve as watchdogs.

Environment

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog does not fare well in city living conditions. They are also not ideal apartment pets. The ideal home for these dogs is in rural and suburban areas with ample space to move about.

Grooming

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog’s grooming requirement is bit high. Their coats require constant and special attention. This is a dog that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is very easy to train and will learn new lessons very fast.

Health

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs are generally healthy dogs. Some lines of this Polish sheepdog breed are known to have patent ductus arteriosus.

Exercise

The Polish Lowland Sheepdogs were bred to be natural hunters. This makes them very active and should have sufficient exercise sessions to satisfy their activity needs.
