History

The Portuguese Shepherd Dog is an old herding dog breed that is believed to be 100 years old and originates in Portugal’s elevated regions of Serra de Aire. This shepherd dog breed was specifically bred by Portuguese shepherds to be their all-purpose working companion. This is a dog that can herd, drive and guard livestock on rugged mountain terrain and high altitude weather conditions. It is fondly called as the monkey dog for its jovial and mischievous appearance and lively temperament that is monkey-like.

Personality

Portuguese Shepherd Dog is one very devoted sheepdog that is famous for being intelligent and high-spirited when doing his job. These sheep herding dogs have a strong drive to work and please, doing all they can to get the job done. They are innately happy, loyal and well mannered. This breed’s sharp mind and ability to learn quickly makes them one of the most trainable sheepdogs in the world. They are versatile, skilled in both guarding and herding but also great to have as a family companion.

Portuguese Sheepdogs were bred to be the all-purpose mountain dogs of Portuguese shepherds that can be used as herders, flock drover and guardians in various mountainous terrain and harsh weather conditions.

Environment

Portuguese Sheepdogs are not recommended as apartment dogs. These are dogs naturally bred to live and work outdoors.

Portuguese Sheepdog has this all-weather coat that requires little attention. Their coats only need occasional and light brushing to keep it healthy.
