Introduction

There are two varieties of the Portuguese Water Dog, or locally called in Portugal as the Cão de Água which literally means “dog of water” in Portuguese:

• The Longhaired Portuguese Water Dog or Cão de Água Pelo Ondulado.
• The Curly-Coated Portuguese Water Dog or Cão de Água Pelo Encaradolado.

History

Portuguese fishing men have been using the Portuguese Water Dog as a working companion for several centuries now. This ancient dog breed was specifically created to be impressive fish gatherers and fishing line retrievers. The Cao de Aqua also displayed impressive skills as aquatic messengers, delivering messages from one boat to another. During the early parts of the 20th century, Portugal’s fishing industry saw a decline and these dogs saw a major decline in their population. This industry decline made the Portuguese Water Dog breed obsolete as working dogs and nearly went extinct. A wealthy Portuguese dog lover saved the Cao de Agua from extinction by breeding these dogs not as working dogs, but as ideal companion pets.

Personality

The Portuguese Water Dog is a working dog breed that is known to be intelligent and biddable. These dogs are famous for their impressive endurance and stamina. They are also dogs known for showing tremendous devotion towards the family. These dogs got their name for nothing, the Cao de Agua lives to work and play in the water! This particular breed is one of the best swimmers in the dog world! All in all, the Portuguese Waterdogs are brace and loyal and always high spirited.

Bred For

The Cao de Agua was developed as a swimming dog that worked with Portuguese fishermen. They were also used as fish herders and catchers, aquatic retrievers, boat messengers and guard dogs of boats at the port.

Environment

The Portuguese Water Dog is okay to keep as apartment pets. Owners should make sure to have them exercise needs sufficiently satisfied if this is the case. The ideal living conditions for these dogs are indoors, living close to their family with ample playtime in an average-sized yard.

Grooming

The Portuguese Waterdog is a breed that requires regular grooming attention. Weekly brushing and combing should be done. They are dogs that shed hair in little amounts to none at all. These are also hypoallergenic dogs that will be perfect for people with allergies!

Training

Portuguese Water Dogs are known for their high intelligence and eagerness to please as well as being very obedient. These traits make them highly trainable

Health

The Portuguese Water Dogs is a fairly healthy dog breed. Some lines of the Cao de Agua are known to be more prone to acquiring progressive retinal atrophy as well as hip dysplasia compared to the other lines of this dog breed. These dogs are also known to be plagued by a fatal nerve affecting a disease known as GM-1 Storage Disease.

Exercise

Portuguese Water Dogs are known to be highly energetic and should have owners that can equal their high energy levels. This dog breed will do best if given a job. Portuguese Water Dogs should be taken on long and brisk walks every day. Making these dogs as your jogging companion is highly recommended. They are also natural swimmers and should be given the chance to play in the water.
