History

The Posavac Hound is a scent hound breed that originates in the European region that was formerly known as Yugoslavia, specifically the area of the Sava Valley that covers a big portion of the modern-day Republic of Croatia. The precise date of this breed’s origin is debatable as some dog historians consider the modern-day Posavac Hound as the same breed with the ancient hound breed that was used in this European region as early as the 14th century. But the common and more accepted history of this breed’s development was during the 1700s. Regardless of the date of origin, it is still considered as a very old dog breed that has been in existence for more than 400 years. The Posavac Hound is believed to be the descendants of the crosses between Molossian hunting dogs and the Egyptian sighthounds. It was first recognized as an official and distinct breed by the Federation Cynologique Internationale in 1995 under the name Posavac Basin Hound.

Personality

The Posavac Hound is a hunting dog that is self-assured and equipped with a highly developed sense of smell that it uses to track down its prey. They may be hunting dogs but these hounds are also good around children and will display its affection and lively disposition towards their family. They are obedient and will be capable of watchdogs.
