History

The Presa Canario dog breed originated in the islands of Tenerife and Grand Canaria of the Canary Islands. Originally, these dogs were specifically bred to be pit or ring fighting dogs. This dog breed’s actual date of origin is unclear, but historical accounts during the 16th and 17th centuries tell that the Presa Canario dogs were popularly used as cattle drivers and a guard dogs by the native islanders. The native of the Canary Islands created these dogs by crossing the various European mastiffs with their local dogs that were used for driving cattle.

Personality

The Presa Canario dog breed is known to be an even-keeled breed. They are large and very strong dogs that are known to display calmness and impressive attentiveness as well as confidence. These island dogs may look intimidating, but the Presa Canario is a dog that will be very affectionate and shall display calmness towards the family. They will display these traits even when around children of all ages as well as strangers. The Canary dog as it is also called is also known to be aloof and dog-aggressive to other male dogs. They will get along with other dogs provided that these are submissive and of the opposite sex. This particular nearly went extinct during the 1960s. They were saved through the initiative of Dr. Carl Semencic who revived this breed by starting a revival breeding program.

Bred For

The Presa Canario was bred specifically for dogfighting. They were also used to drive cattle and as guard dogs by the Canary Island natives.

Environment

The Presa Canario can be good apartment pets provided that their owners have their energy needs sufficiently satisfied. These large and powerful dogs will do great in homes that have an average-sized yard.

Grooming

The Canary dogs have short and rough coats that are very easy to groom and requires little attention. They are dogs that will shed hair in average amounts.

Training

The Presa Canario can be a well-trained dog provided that their trainers are firm, confident and will display consistent stability and have a positive training approach.

Health

These dogs native to the Canary Islands are regarded as generally healthy as a breed. Medical issues do occur occasionally and they vary from demodectic mange, hip and elbow dysplasia, entropion, epileptic seizures, luxating patellas and hypothyroidism. They are also known to acquire Wobbler syndrome.

Exercise

The Presa Canario dog breed should be taken on long walks every day.
