Introduction

Prince Charles Toy Spaniels is one of four types of English Toy Spaniels accepted for centuries as different breeds but now treated as just varieties of coats for one dog breed. The Prince Charles variety is the spaniel that is known for having a tricolored coat. It has black, white and tan markings on its cheeks, inside their ears, on their eyebrows, inside their legs and on the underside of their tails.

These specific toy spaniel dogs were named after Charles II, heir to Charles I who pioneered the breeding of the King Charles variety.

History

The first recorded accounts of the Prince Charles Toy Spaniel dog variety were during the 17th century where several painters including Dutch artists Peter Paul Rubens, Caspar Netshcer, Spanish artists Juan de Valdes Leal and Diego Velazquez depicted these small companion dogs named after Charles II in their artworks.

Prince Charles Toy Spaniels, together with King Charles, Blenheim and Ruby Toy Spaniel dogs are four varieties of the English Toy Spaniel family which were considered as separate breeds up until the earlier part of the twentieth century. Purist breeders of this small companion breed still consider each variety as separate breeds, but officially and internationally, all four are generally called English Toy Spaniel dogs.

Personality

Prince Charles Toy Spaniels are dogs that are composed, pleasing, and caring dogs that are even-tempered and get along with almost everyone.

Bred For

Developed as companion dogs and hunting dogs for small game.

Environment

Prince Charles Toy Spaniels are fine for apartment living. These dogs do not do well in very warm weather.

Grooming

Prince Charles and King Charles variety have the longest coats among the four. Their coat is moderately long, silky, and straight or slightly wavy, with feathering on the ears, feet, and back of the legs and tail demands high attention and maintenance. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

Training them would be moderately difficult, but these dogs are naturally bred to live life with rules, follow and limits to what they are allowed to do.

Health

Prince Charles Toy Spaniels may suffer from major health problems resulting in skin allergies, hip and elbow dysplasia, luxating patellas, mitral valve disease and syringomyelia.

Exercise

Prince Charles Toy Spaniels require daily walking sessions to keep them healthy.
