Introduction

Pug dogs are called differently in different parts of the world. In its native country China, they are called Lo-Sze dogs. In Germany, they are called Hops. In Holland, these dogs are called Hopshonds. In France, they are called the Carlin dog breed.

History

Pugs are dogs that originated in China. Dog experts believe that this dog breed descends from the ancient Chinese dogs that existed and were bred more than 2,000 years ago. Several centuries later, the Pug reached Tibet as well as the island nation of Japan. Dog experts believed that Pug dogs made their way out of China by being used as royal gifts and objects of barter. By the 16th century, this dog breed has reached the European continent. During the 17th century, Pug became so popular in Europe specifically in Holland. Presently, these small companion dogs are still one of the most popular toy dog breeds around the world.

Personality

Being affectionate and loving are the famous traits of the Pug dog bred. These are highly social toy dogs that will display an eagerness to please their masters and will genuinely enjoy the company of children. These dogs are intelligent but are also known to be stubborn. Pugs are also famous for being a snoring dog!

Bred For

Pugs are believed to have been bred originally as royal companions, gifts and objects of barter in China. Today, they are also being bred as perfect companion dogs, watchdogs and taught to perform tricks!

Environment

The Pug is a small dog perfect to be kept as apartment pets. These dogs are sensitive to hot or cold weather and should be given special attention if living in extreme temperatures.

Grooming

Pugs are one of the easiest to groom among all the dogs in their size category. Their smooth and short-haired coat should be brush and combed occasionally. They are dogs that shed hair in heavy amounts every season.

Training

Pugs are known to be highly intelligent when it comes to training. They do get bored easily if lessons are repetitive. Lastly, studies show that Pugs who are overfed live shorter lives as compared with those dogs that have supervised diets.

Health

The Pug dog breed is one of the most disease plagued dog breed known today. The most common health problem for this breed is colds as they are easily stressed in hot and cold weather conditions. These dogs are also plagued by chronic respiratory problems and allergies that will lead to reactions such as wheezing and snoring, rashes and skin related-problems. Pugs are also a very high risk of developing mast cell tumors. Pug Dog Encephalitis is a disease named after this breed as Pugs are at high risk of having inflammation in the brain. Whelping will be difficult for these small dogs and giving birth is often done through cesarean section. Pugs are also very prone to various eye disorders, diseases and issues from the cherry eyes, ulcers of the cornea and Keratitis.

Exercise

Pugs may be littler dogs but they are strong and require daily activities to remain fit mentally and physically. These dogs should be taken on walks every day.
