Introduction

There was a time when Puli and Pumi dogs were treated as one breed. The two Hungarian dog breeds were recognized as two separate dog breeds only during the early years of the 20th century.

History

The Puli dog breed is recognized today as one of the ancient dog breeds that still exist. This dog breed originated in Hungary and is believed to be linked or direct descendants of the 9th century Tibetan Terrier dog breed. They were originally bred by the Huns but was embraced in Hungary as a very reliable shepherd dog. These dogs were so impressive as shepherding dogs that record dating as far back as 1,000 years ago says that Hungarians preferred them than any dog breed when it comes to this particular task. By the 16th century, invasions and migrations of Western Europeans to Hungary made way for the creation of the modern Puli. These migrants and invaders crossed Puli’s with various sheepdogs and terrier breeds. Today, Hungarians continue to breed and use these dogs as herders of sheep and horses and cattle drivers. It reached American shores during the 1920s.

Personality

Puliks are very active dogs known for their intelligence. These dogs will display affection and love towards the family. When around friends, Puli dogs will be very playful. These are dogs that will show wariness towards strangers. They are also dogs known to be very vocal.

Bred For

These dogs were used by the Magyar people of Hungary as sheepdogs. These dogs were kept as herders and cattle drivers.

Environment

Hungarian Pulik is very adaptable when it comes to living conditions. They can do great in rural, suburban or highly urbanized areas. They are also dogs that can thrive in farms and in apartments.

Grooming

These dogs are famous for their corded coats which is a coat-type that requires very special attention when it comes to grooming. Corded coats will form as early during these dogs’ 6th month. They require early grooming attention to have them separated for easy management as they grow old. Regular maintenance of their corded coats is a must and bathing should be done regularly.

Training

Hungarian Pulik dogs are known for their naturally high intelligence, making this Hungarian dog breed very easy to train.

Health

The Hungarian Pulik is one of the ancient dog breeds known today. Like most ancient breeds, they are resilient and considered as generally healthy.

Exercise

Hungarian Pulik dogs should be taken on walks or jogging sessions every day.
