Introduction

The Serbian Mountain Hound or Srpski Planinski Gonic is one of two modern hounds breeds that was once called as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound or Jugoslovenski Planinski Gonic. This is the modern variety of Yugoslavian Mountain Hounds that were specifically bred and used in the areas covering modern-day Serbia.

The other variety is the Montenegrin Mountain Hound or Crnogorski Planinski Gonič, a hound that is bred in the Balkan region covering the modern-day Montenegro.

Basically, these two are considered similar breeds, varying only in the regions where these dogs saw further development after the dissolution of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

History

The Serbian Mountain Hound is the modern variety of the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound that is the prototype breed where the Serbian and Montenegrin mountain hound varieties were bred from. This particular Yugoslavian hound breed is the variety that is bred and used in Serbia. These dogs are considered to be very rare outside of Serbia. Personality

Serbian Mountain Hounds are hardy scent hounds that will display boldness, persistence and keen scenting abilities while out on the field. Although able to hunt on all kinds of terrain, these hounds are highly skilled hunters on rough terrains that is the natural landscape of the Balkan region where these dogs were first developed. Their boldness on hunting hares, foxes, deer and other quarries will be seen only on the job. At home, these hounds will be good-natured displaying gentleness and a calm demeanor.

Training

Naturally intelligent, the Serbian Mountain Hound will be easy to train. It is recommended to have them socialized and trained for obedience at an early age.

Health

The Serbian Mountain Hound is known to be very healthy.

Exercise

Serbian Mountain Hound dogs require average exercise sessions and should be taken on walks every day and outdoor trips every weekend.
