Introduction

In Japan, the Shiba Inu is not just a dog breed. These dogs are treated as natural treasures of the Japanese culture and play a significant role in shaping the identity of the Japanese race.

History

The Shiba Inu dog breed is Japan’s oldest native breed and it is also the country’s smallest dogs! Pioneer Japanese breeders developed these dogs to hunt small game, flush birds as well as hunting dogs that do head-to-head against wild boars. The Japanese people treat them as national treasures and considered culturally significant to the Japanese identity. They are also treated as a natural monument that represents a section of the ancient Japanese culture. This dog breed nearly saw extinction after World War II, but it has bounced backed and today most Shiba Inu dogs are kept as companion pets.

Personality

Like most northern dogs, the Shiba Inu is known to be independently minded. They have a tendency to roam and wander about. Shiba-Inu dogs are also known for their alertness, curiosity and intelligence. These are dogs that will be lively and fun-loving towards friends and family.

Training

Shiba dogs are known to be a bit hard to train but firm and consistent training methods should bring the best out of this breed. They will pick up training techniques and will be fairly simple to be properly house-trained.

Health

The Shiba Inu is a relatively healthy dog breed. The only known health issues that are common to this spitz-type dog are PRA or progressive retinal atrophy, slipped kneecaps and hip dysplasia.

Exercise

Shiba Inu are dogs that do not require plenty or vigorous amount of exercise. Having these dogs on a half an hour exercise regimen every day should be sufficient. Long walks twice a week is also highly recommended for the Shiba Inu.
