Introduction

One of the oldest of all Japanese dog breeds, the Shikoku is also called the Kochi-Ken and Shikoku-Ken. Among the Japanese breeds, the Shikoku is also the rarest! If you are looking for a tough dog that is full of personality, Shikoku is the perfect dog for you. In addition, these dogs are very loyal and good-natured. Therefore, they would be perfect as companion dogs.

History

The Shikoku or also called the Kochi is an old Japanese dog breed and also considered among the rarest breed in the world. However, the exact date of origin is quite unclear, but it was established as one of Japan’s official Natural Treasures in the year 1937. The dog breed’s isolated area of origin makes them one of the purest dog breeds as they were not crossed with other foreign and native dog breeds.

Personality

The Shikoku is brave but at the same time cautious. They are even-tempered dogs that are famous for having good judgment and sixth sense when it comes to trusting people. Loyalty and absolute devotion are always present with this Japanese dog breed. Therefore, it craves human touch and will enjoy kisses from its human family. They are not aggressive but will be wary and somewhat aloof towards strangers. The Shikokus are natural hunting dogs that will not be good around small animals as they will treat them as prey. This is a dog breed that will be fast learners and very intelligent, making them highly trainable.

Bred for

This particular Japanese spitz-type dog breed was created to hunt wild bears and deer across the mountainous terrain of Shikoku Island’s Kochi region.

Environment

These dogs are indoor dogs that enjoy outdoor activities too.  But, if kept outdoors the house yard should be fenced. However, they won’t be happy if separated from their owners.

Grooming

The Shikoku dog is easy to groom. However, if thinking about adopting a dog of this breed, you should know that over-bathing may dry their skin. Therefore, a bath every few months is usually sufficient.

Training

This particular Japanese dog breed is very bright with a good memory. Also, they are very intelligent so training them should be a breeze. On the other hand, they can sometimes bee very independent and stubborn. Therefore are not recommended for novice dog owners.

Since they are natural hunters, they can be easily distracted so as an owner, you must have a lot of patience.

Health

The Shikoku is considered to be healthy and no alarming genetic disorder or medical problem has been documented to affect this breed.

Exercise

Shikoku dogs will benefit if given a good amount of activity. They should be taken on walks every day and should be taken on jogging sessions at least three times a week. However, they should never stay unsupervised when in an unsafe area.
