Introduction

The National Rat Terrier Association recognizes two body types of the Rat Terrier Breed.

• The Class A or Long-legged Rat Terriers have square bodies and longer legs.
• The Class B or Short-legged Rat Terriers have shorter leg length in proportion to their longer bodies.

History

Class B or Long-legged Rat Terriers is one of two types of this breed that evolved into two separate body types. Class B are the ones that are low-set, with shorter legs and body length that does not exceed 3 inches or less than 1 ¾ from the
height. This standard goes with all recognized size varieties from the Standard, Miniature and the Toy Rat Terrier variants.

Personality

Short-legged Rat Terriers are known to be bright dogs that will be inquisitive and very active all the time. These dogs have remarkable gameness and known to be absolutely tenacious during the hunt. When at home, and around family, Short-legged Rat Terriers will be genial and shall exhibit a warm and loving disposition.

Training

Class B Rat Terriers are well-known for their eagerness to please disposition. They are fast to learn and adjust, making these dogs very easy and pleasurable to train!

Health

The Short-legged Rat Terrier dog breed is known to be at high risk of developing hip and elbow dysplasia and luxating patellas. These dogs are also at high risk of acquiring mange and allergies.

Exercise

All the varieties of Rat Terriers need a good amount of activity to suit their energy requirements. Rat terrier dogs should be taken on long walks or jogging every day.
