History

The Icelandic Sheepdog is and one and only indigenous domesticated breed of dog within the island nation of Iceland. Shorthaired Icelandic Sheepdogs are one of two types of this Nordic breed which were presumed to have appeared in Iceland during the late 9th and the early 10th century. These dogs were introduced to the island by Vikings and native Icelandic farmers and hunters immediately noticed their capacity as excellent herding dogs.

Personality

This Nordic dog group is considered as a vital role-player for Iceland’s farming industry for their versatility and adaptability to herd and guard livestock in all terrain and all weather conditions. But when not working, these dogs will show their mild and sunny side. These Northern dogs will do wonderfully with people including children of all ages. Environment

They will be not suited for condominium and apartment dwellings. The Icelandic Sheepdog demands loads of physical exercise and cramped or confined living spaces will make them high strung.
