The Silken Windhound is a dog breed that looks like a miniature Borzoi or a variety of the Whippet dog breed that has long hair for its coat.

History

The Silken Windhound dog breed started being developed as a distinct breed in the United States during the 1960s, but the serious and more official start of a selective breeding program for this breed cam two decades later during the 1980s.

During the 1960s, small sighthounds with long hairs as coats were being bred casually. American Breeders mainly used lines of the Whippet breed to produce this specimen. The first breeders to do this were the Windsprite Kennel of America. During the 1980s, Kennel Kristull began a serious breeding program to produce consistent small long-haired sighthounds crossing lines of the Whippets and some Borzoi dogs to achieve the goal. From then on, the specimens produce from this cross was named as the Silken Windhound.

They are dogs created not to be a miniature version of the Borzoi or just a longhaired variety of the Whippet dog breed. They were developed to satisfy the demand for having smaller but fast sighthounds with longhair on their coats.

Personality

Silken Windhounds are very responsive and intelligent sighthounds that are known to have a strong drive to please their masters and their human family. This dog breed has a bearing that can describe as dignified. They will display genuine affection and will do it as expressive as they can towards people that they are fond of having around. When out on the field, this sighthound breed will display their competitive spirit but will never be aggressive to other dogs. It is a sighthound that can and will adapt quickly to life as a family pet.

Bred For

The Silken Windhound was specifically created to satisfy the demand for a smaller sighthound with long hair on their coat.

Environment

Silken Windhounds are rural or suburban dogs that require a yard for them to run, a thing that these dogs are fond of doing. They can adapt to an apartment living condition provided that they are sufficiently exercised. These dogs will thrive in homes with a large yard that is well fenced for them to safely run about.

Grooming

The Silken Windhound has a longhaired coat that is easy to groom. Brushing it weekly would be sufficient. Some lines of the Silken Windhound shed as much as the Borzoi of Golden Retriever. Some dogs of this breed do not shed hair at all.

Training

Silken Windhounds are very trainable for their innate and strong instinct to please their masters.

Health

The Silken Windhound dog breed is considered as very healthy as there are no known genetic disorders or common diseases that affect this breed.

Exercise

Silken Windhounds are natural sighthounds that love to run! They should be taken for long walks every day and given time to run at the local dog park two times a week.
