The Sloughis are dogs that were used to hunt wild games in the harsh deserts of Northern Africa. This sighthound dog breed is considered as among the rarest dogs in the world today amid various renewal and revival programs have done across the world.

the Sloughi are one-person or one-family dogs that will get strongly attached to their owner. In addition, they can be very stubborn. Therefore, they are not recommended for novice dog owners.

History

The Sloughi’s history is unclear but dog experts believed that this dog breed is one of the descendants of the drop-eared sighthounds that ancient Egyptians treasured. These sighthounds were used by the Berber tribe that is indigenous to regions that are now the countries of Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, and Morocco. Also, these dogs were used by the Bedouin nomads. They are hunters of the small and medium-sized game but were also used, flock guardian. The Sloughi nearly became extinct at the turn of the 20th century for various reasons which includes diseases, social and political upheavals that North Africa faced for several decades. Renewal and revival programs were done in various parts of the world but still considered as very rare for their few numbers.

Personality

The Sloughi is affectionate and devoted to its family but wary with strangers. These gods will get along with almost everyone, including kids and other dog breeds. In addition, they are dogs that mature slowly and tend to be sensitive.

This breed is a very intelligent and independent breed with a strong hunting and chasing instinct.

The Sloughi are dogs that were used to hunt wild games in harsh deserts. They are impressive when hunting desert hares, jackals, gazelles and foxes.

Environment

Sloughi dogs are very adaptable when it comes to living conditions. They are perfect for indoor living. However, they will need a free space where they can run and be active.

Grooming

The Sloughi dogs are very low maintenance when it comes to their grooming. These dogs have a very short coat with no undercoat. Therefore, brushing and bathing occasionally will help to remove dead hair and keep the coat healthy and shiny.

Training

These dogs are sensitive and will be a bit difficult to train but patience and consistency will make these dogs trained.

Health

Sloughi’s are dogs that can suffer from several medical problems including PRA or progressive retinal atrophy, atrophy of the jaw and heart murmurs. Also, they are very sensitive to anesthesia.

Exercise

Sloughi dogs were born to run! This makes them excellent jogging partners. Therefore, they are dogs that love daily walks and running sessions. The ideal situation for them will be to run off-leash. In conclusion, this breed will be a perfect match for active families with children.
