History

The Slovakian Hound, also called as the Slovenský Kopov originates from the country Slovak Republic and this breed is believed to have been bred and used since the ancient times. This scent hound breed was created to be a pure hunting dog that goes after a large game and specializes in hunting wild boars. The Slovak hound dog is very similar to his other European scent hound cousins, sharing resemblances in appearance and in hunting techniques.

The precise foundation stock of this breed has been lost in history, but most dog experts believe that lines of the Chart Polski, Austrian Brandlbracke and the Hungarian Greyhound are the primary progenitors of this Slovak hound breed. It is common in its native country and surrounding areas but beyond that, the Slovak Hound dog is considered among one of the rare dog breeds in the world.

In North America, this breed is also called the Black Forest Hound. It has nothing to do with the Black Forest region of Eastern Europe and this named is just used for marketing reasons.

Personality

The Slovakian Hound is a scent hound known for its independence, intelligence and capability to be easily trained. This Slovakian bred hound breed is prized for their extraordinary sense of direction while out hunting their prey. They are bold and very courageous, tough enough to hunt large wild boars that are ten times its size. This is a very spirited hunter with a fearless streak when face against larger prey.

Slovak hound dogs are very active and packed with impressive stamina.
