Introduction

The Slovak Rough-haired Pointer is a Central European gun dog breed that is called by many names. In its native country, it is called Slovensky Hrubosrsty Stavac or Slovenský Oha’ Hrubosrstý. In other European countries that breed the Slovak Rough-Haired Pointing dog it is known as Slowakischer Rauhbart (Germany and surrounding German-speaking nations), Griffon d’arret Slovaque a Poil Dur (France and other French-speaking nations) and the Eslovaco de Pelo Duro (Spain and other Spanish speaking nations). In the United States, it is commonly called simply as the SRHP.

This particular dog breed is called by many, and often confusing names including the Slovak Wirehaired Pointer, the Slovak Pointing Griffon, the Slovak Wirehaired Pointing Griffon and the Slovak Wirehaired Pointing Dog.

History

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is a very young gun dog breed that originates in the former Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, specifically in the region now covering the modern-day Slovak Republic. They were first developed during the 1950s by pioneer breed Mr. Koloman Slimak. Mr. Slimak created this breed to be a versatile and packed with high endurance gun dog that excels in hunting, pointing and retrieving. To produce this breed, Mr. Slimak added the German wirehaired pointer, Pudelpointer, Weimanaraner and Cesky Fousek in its foundation stock.

Today this young breed is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and The Kennel Club of The United Kingdom as an attractive and very functional all-purpose working dog.

Personality

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer may be excellent hunting, pointing and retrieving dog but it is also perfectly suited for a home environment setting. This positively channeled dog is very affectionate, lively and energetic. This dog breed is very obedient and prized for their agility and can be trained as skilled athletes to compete in various dog trails and competitions.

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer was developed to be a versatile and packed with high endurance gun dog that excels in hunting, pointing and retrieving.

Environment

Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers are dogs not suited to keep as apartment pets. They can live in this type of living conditions if the dog is sufficiently exercised and taking out for long walks and jogging every day. These dogs will thrive in rural or suburban homes with a spacious yard.

Grooming

Slovak Rough-haired Pointing dogs are fairly easy to groom and do not require a lot of attention and effort to keep in tip-top shape. Frequent bathing should not be done. These dogs should have their ears checked, their teeth brushed and nails clipped regularly.

Training

The Slovakian Rough-haired pointing dog is highly trainable and can be trained to compete in agility, obedience and other dog trials and competitions.

Health

The Slovakian Rough-haired pointer is generally healthy as a breed and has not been known to be affected by any type of genetic disorder.

Exercise

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is a tireless dog that will be extremely energetic. Vigorous exercise is important for these dogs and should be taken out for long and brisk walks every day. Taking these jogs out for jogging is also recommended.
