Introduction

There are four varieties of the Small Swiss Hound dog breed:

• The Small Bernese Hound or Berner Niederlaufhund are Small Swiss Hounds with black and white tan markings located on the eye area. This variety often comes in Tricolor coats and come in Smooth and Rough coat varieties;
• The Small Jura Hound or Jura Niederlaufhund are Small Swiss Hounds with smooth single coats that are black with tan markings just above the eye region;
• The Small Lucerne Hound or Luzerner Niederlaufhund are the Small Swiss Hounds that are famous for being blue in appearance for their smooth white coats with grey or black speckled patches;
• The Small Schwyz Hound or Schwyzer Niederlaufhund are the Small Swiss Hounds with smooth white coats that have yellow-red to orange-red patches.

History

The Small Swiss Hound or Schweizer Niederlaufhunde is a dog breed that originates in Switzerland during the late 1800s. They are the smaller version of the Swiss Hound dog breed also known as the Schweizer Laufhund. The Small Swiss Hound breed is available in four varieties that only differ in their coat color. These dogs were created as the sports of shoots or hunting grounds became popular in Switzerland. Medium-sized Swiss Laufhundes were considered to fast for enclosed shoots and Swiss breeders wanted a smaller and short-legged variety. Selective breeding resulted in a dog originally called as the Niederlaufhund or Short-Legged Scent hound. This particular bred-down variety was very short-legged and produced eye-catching coat colors which became famous for Swiss Hound fanciers. Since then, the four coat varieties are carefully selected and bred to produce consistent results.

Personality

The Small Swiss Hound is exactly like the Swiss Hound, but smaller and have shorter legs. This does not diminish their hunting capabilities. They are hardy hunting dogs that can and will be impressive hunting in rugged and difficult terrain. Small Swiss Hounds have highly developed scents, tracking game with impressive determination and persistence. These are dogs known to be excellent companion dogs, displaying friendliness and reliability towards their owners.

Health

All the varieties of Small Swiss Hounds are considered to be generally healthy.

Exercise

All the varieties of Small Swiss Hounds are equally energetic and should be taken on very long walks every day.
