Introduction

The Smooth Fox Terrier is one of two varieties of Fox Terriers which originated in England. The other variety is the Wire Fox Terrier. This particular breed is the first-ever dog breed to be recognized as a distinct group among all the various fox terrier lines, having officially distinguished as a separate breed in 1875 by The Kennel Club.

Fox Terriers that have smooth and fine coats are called Smooth Fox Terrier to differentiate them from the Wire-haired Fox Terriers.  This dog breed is also fondly called as the Foxie or simply as SFT.

History

Smooth Fox Terrier was officially established as a distinct terrier breed in the year 1876, but their origins can be traced back as early as the 1790s. Today, some clubs consider the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier as a single breed, but in the United States, these two are considered two unique breeds. The SFT variety is bred to be fox bolting terriers, these are the dos who hunt in packs, teaming up with various foxhound breeds to hunt foxes and driving them out of their burrows. Smooth fox terriers have a fine short coating that is smooth and more likely to get damaged in rough terrains when compared to the wire coated variety.

Personality

Like most terriers, Smooth Fox Terriers are dogs that are not good home pets together with other small animals. They are also not recommended to have around very young children. These terriers are very exuberant and would treat smaller animals and very young children as prey or an object to hunting.

Training

Smooth Fox Terriers are dogs with high intelligence which makes training easy compared to other terriers.

Health

Cushing’s disease, deafness, hip dysplasia, Legg-Perthes disease, luxating patellas and skin allergies are the most common health problems that affect both Fox Terrier variety.

Exercise

The Smooth Fox Terrier dog breed needs to be taken on a daily, long walk or jog.
