History

The South African Mastiff originates in Africa’s southern regions covering the areas of Zimbabwe modern-day South Africa. It is believed that they were originally bred during Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival to southern Africa in 1652. He brought a Bullenbijter dog with him and this was crossed with the indigenous dogs’ local this part of Africa. The European settlers and later the Afrikaans bred these dogs as guardians of the homestead. They were specifically created to be hardy and powerful enough to defend against larger predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs and even hyenas. They are dogs also used to hunt and track games.

Personality

The South African Mastiffs are very impressive guard dogs! They are muscular and nimble when on the job. They are natural protectors that will protect its area with remarkable valor. They are also composed of dogs that have a steady disposition. This makes them valued watchdogs that are sought after all over the world. The South African Mastiffs are very subservient and very sharp making them one of the top choices when it comes to guard dog breeds. They will be great guards in rural and urban communities.

Training

The South African Mastiff may display willfulness and often be headstrong. This may result to some difficulty when being trained. They can be well trained and will be obedient if trainers are firm, consistent and dominant.

Health

South African Mastiffs are famous for being very healthy but various health problems do occur. These may include hip and elbow dysplasia, ectropion and entropion. Female South African Mastiff s are known to be affected by vaginal hyperplasia. In recent year’s epilepsy in young South African Mastiff s appeared in significant numbers which are thought to be caused by stress or metabolism change.

Exercise

Like most working dogs their size, the South African Mastiff s is active dogs that will require plenty of activities. They are dogs that require open spaced to run.
