Introduction

The Stabyhoun is a versatile Dutch pointing dog breed that can effectively serve as hunting, guarding, drafting and also as companions. These dogs are very obedient, gentle and good-natured. Also, they are very fond of their family and can become deeply attached to their owners.

History

Stabyhoun are gun dogs developed in The Netherlands during the 19th century. This Dutch pointing dog breed is believed to be the descendants of the Spanish spaniel-like hounds that were brought to the “Spanish Netherlands”. These were the Low Countries which were occupied by Spain starting from 1556 until the year 1714. 

Personality

The Stabyhoun is an independent hunting dog. Therefore, they have very sharp-eye and a good sense of smell.  This friendly and lively dog is very affectionate and will be very attached to its family. In addition, they are also very loyal, sensitive and patient. So, if you are looking for a great companion, The Stabyhoun will be perfect for you!

Bred For

Dutch pointers were created to be multipurpose dogs that can be used for hunting, guarding, drafting and also as companions.

Environment

Since they can be very fond of their family, it won’t be good for these dogs if you keep them outdoors. Therefore, they are more indoor pets and will be great as apartment dogs. However, they will need a good amount of outdoor activities to maintain their health. Also, they are very adaptive as the Stabyhoun thrive in warm climates but will also adapt pretty well in colder climates.

Grooming

This breed has a long coat that comes in black, white and orange with white markings. The Stabyhoun dogs don’t require much brushing or bathing. An occasional brush to remove dead hair will be sufficient. Also, an occasional bath just if needed will do the work. However, baths can ruin their coat.

Training

Stabyhoun dogs are considered highly trainable because of their soft temperament, friendliness, high tolerance and willingness to please their handlers. However, consistent training is more than welcome when it comes to this breed.

As for any dog, early socialization and training will make them good grown-up dogs.

Health

The Stabyhoun is a healthy dog breed because Dutch breeders have eradicated health problems that affected these dogs before.

Exercise

For the exercise needs of the Stabyhoun dogs, they require a fair amount and degree of exercise. They need everyday walks and have enough time to play in a large yard. In conclusion, these dogs will be perfect for you if you are looking for a highly active companion!
