Introduction

The Standard Rat Terrier is one of two Rat Terrier varieties that is duly recognized by the United Kennel Club. It is also one of four size varieties that are recognized by the National Rat Terrier Association and its various affiliated groups.

History

The Standard Rat Terriers originated in the United States during the early years of the 20th century. They were personally named by American Icon Teddy Roosevelt for being efficient rat hunters. This particular breed was created from various terrier and hunting dog breeds and underwent several re-breeding. Personality

Standard Rat Terriers are very active dogs famous for their intelligence and innate curiosity. They were favored by Teddy Roosevelt for being versatile hunting companions and became popular across Midwest America for their multi-purpose working abilities. When out on the field, these excellent hunting dogs will show remarkable gameness and tenacity. If not hunting, Standard Rat Terriers are affable and affectionate family pets. They are very docile and well behaved, making these dogs great to have around children, other dog breeds and even cats!

Bred For

The Standard Rat Terrier dog breed was originally developed as ratters. They were also as hunting dogs, companion dogs, family pets and also as a multi-purpose farm working dog.

Environment

Rat Terriers in general will do okay as apartment dogs provided their owners sufficiently satisfy their activity requirements. The Standard Rat Terriers are great for suburban homes.

Grooming

All the varieties of the Rat Terrier dog breed are very easy to groom and will require minimal attention in doing so.

Training

Standard Rat Terriers will be easy and enjoyable to train as these dogs are intelligent, quick to learn and eager to please.

Health

The Rat Terrier dog breed is known to be at high risk on developing hip and elbow dysplasia and luxating patellas. These dogs are also at high risk on acquiring mange and allergies. They are dogs that are common to have under or overbites.

Exercise

All the varieties of Rat Terriers require a pretty good amount of activity to satisfy their energy needs. Rat terrier dogs should be taken on long walks or jogging every day. Owners are advised to devote at least 30 minutes every day to exercise their dogs. Rat terriers will love outdoor activities and challenging games that will test their mental and physical strengths.
