History

Sussex Spaniel got its name from the area where it was first developed and bred as a field dog. These spaniel-type dogs have been bred out of Sussex, England as a distinct purebred since the 1800s. They are famous for being excellent hunting dogs that can work on very large estates.

Personality

Sussex Spaniels are very friendly and are known to have an easy-going disposition. These dogs are also known for being hard workers that will perform effortlessly during the hunt. These dogs will be protective of their home and their family. They love to bark a lot.

Bred For

Sussex Spaniels were bred to be versatile dogs that can hunt and retrieve. They can hunt effortlessly in very large estates.

Environment

Sussex Spaniels are not dogs suited to be apartment pets. They are also not good to have in the city. These are rural dogs that should be given a job or have regular vigorous activities to do.

Grooming

Sussex Spaniels are dogs that require moderate amount and attention when it comes to grooming. They are dogs that shed hair in average amounts.

Training

Sussex Spaniels will not be easy to train but they can be well trained. These dogs require firm, consistent and repetitive training methods to learn.

Health

These spaniels are known to be at high risk for heart-related problems and at high risk for developing intervertebral disc syndrome.

Exercise

Sussex Spaniels are dogs that require regular exercise. Taking them for walks every day is necessary to have these dogs mentally and physically sound.
