Introduction

The Tornjak dog breed is the original Bosnian-Herzegovinian Sheepdog, and the name used for several thousands of years by the native shepherds of the area now covering modern-day Bosnia, Herzegovina and Croatia.

History

The Tornjak is an ancient flock guarding dog that originates in the regions now covering modern-day Bosnia, Herzegovina and parts of Croatia. It has been bred and used as a flock guardian as far back as several thousand years ago. Some breeders prefer to call this breed using its modern name, the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Sheepdog. This breed was originally registered as the Kani Montanus dog, but local sheepherders fondly called it their Tornjak which roughly translates to dogs that enclose sheep and cattle. The name stuck and by 1981, the modern breed was officially named Bosnian-Herzegovinian sheepdog – Tornjak, in honor of their prized stature for the local shepherds. It is believed that these dogs are descendants of the ancient Tibetan Mastiff.

Personality

The Tornjak was created to be all-purpose herding and livestock guardians in rough terrain. This breed was also used as a farm guard dog that is reliable to watch over the livestock, human and property. These are dogs built to do hard work and have a very stable temperament to match that strong work drive. They are dogs that will display courage, calmness, obedience and friendliness. The Tornjak is very intelligent and famous for its dignified and self-confident stance. During work, these dogs will be fierce guard dogs and will be very wary with strangers even when a bribe is offered. Tornjak dogs will be protective of their family and property and affectionate to friends.

Bred For

Tornjak are dogs that were created to be an all-purpose dog that can work as livestock herders, flock guardians, and guard dogs of property and people as well as watchdogs.

Environment

The Tornjak is not an apartment dog. They are dogs that will require ample space to move. They are rural dogs that will thrive in homes with large yards.

Grooming

The Tornjak dog breed is easy to groom. Their diet should be attended to as high-protein nutrition will destroy their all-weather resistant coat.

Training

The Tornjak is naturally easy to train. Their inherent traits of being obedient, strong work drive, high intelligence and eagerness to please their master will make it enjoyable to train flock guardians.

Health

The Tornjak is considered to be a fairly hardy breed and resilient to common medical problems affecting other dogs.

Exercise

The Tornjak dog breed will require plenty of exercises and ample space to move about. These are dogs that should be taken on walks every day and preferably owned by active families with a home that has a large yard.
