Introduction

The Toy Manchester Terrier dog breed is one of two variants of the Manchester Terrier dog group. They are considered to be the oldest terrier breed that still exists today.

History

Manchester terriers, in general, originated in Manchester, England and were developed during the 1800s. The Toy Manchester Terrier variety was bred in the United States and was recognized as a distinct and separate dog breed in 1959. Before their official recognition, these downsized Manchester terriers were named after the color of their coats to avoid being mistaken for the larger variety. They were called Toy Black and Tan Terriers. The toy variety of this particular breed is kept as companion dogs as well as competitive athletes in dog agility competitions.

Personality

Toy Manchester Terriers are terriers at heart and will display typical behavior known to the terrier dog group. These are their impressive hunting skills and instincts as well as their scrappiness. As a downsized version, the Toy Manchester dogs are gentler and more sensitive than their Standard cousins. They will show a bit of reservation and often apprehensive when around strangers. When around their family, these small dogs are very playful and curious!

Bred For

The Toy Manchester Terrier was developed in the United States as a downsized version of the original breed. They were specifically developed for their agility skills in dog competitions.

Environment

These small terriers are perfect pets for owners who live in apartment buildings and city living conditions. They were created to be indoor companion dogs.

Grooming

The Toy variety sheds very little or sheds no hair at all. This makes them one of the easiest to groom among all the terrier dogs.

Training

Toy Manchester terrier dogs were specifically bred for agility competitions and therefore high trainable.

Health

Toy Manchester’s are relatively healthier compared to the Standard variety of this breed. They have no major medical issues that will cause alarm for their owners. Minor health problems do arise and these include Legg-Perthes and lens luxation. These small terriers from England are also occasionally afflicted with epilepsy.

Exercise

The Toy Manchester Terrier dog is naturally active as there were bred specifically for agility competitions. Taking them for long walks or running sessions just won’t do. These dogs need challenging courses to maintain their well-balanced temperament.
