Introduction

The Treeing Feist dog breed is one of the youngest breeds today. They are talented hunters that use impressive agility when “treeing quarry”. Treeing is a hunting term that means to force the hunter prey to take refuge in a tree. The Treeing Feist is also known as squirrel dog because it was used for rodent hunting.

History

Treeing Feist is a very new dog breed. Its origins can be traced in the American South where it was first developed in the 20th century. Huntsmen in America’s Southern states developed this feist-type dog as a small game hunter. The Treeing Feist gained a reputation for specializing in treeing squirrels but is also a capable ratter and hunter of raccoon, possums, rabbits, and hares. These feist dogs are also great in flushing game fowls.

Personality

The small and agile Treeing Feist is an alert and clever hunting dog that is full of courage and overflowing with tenacity. They are considered to be highly trainable, especially if training lessons are work-related. However, when it comes to obedience training, Treeing Feist breeders and fanciers share opposing views. Arguably, some believe that Treeing Feist’s impressive gameness when going after its prey may result in unwanted behavior and push their aggression to very high levels making them unsuited for family life. On the other hand, some believe that Treeing Feist can be ideal house dogs for a family provided that they undergo proper training and socialization.

One thing is for sure, the Treeing Feist is not the dog for everyone. They require owners that are dog-experienced and should have the time and energy to keep up with their demoing activity needs.

Environment

The Treeing Fesit is a breed that lives to hunt. Therefore, these dogs are not suitable for city living and they are not as good as apartment pets. An ideal living place for Treeing Fesit will be a rural or suburban house with a large yard!

Grooming

Treeing Feist requires very little to no grooming attention. Keeping their short coat in tip-top shape if very easy and does not take a lot of time. They are only moderate shedders that will need brushing once or twice a week.

Training

This Feist type dogs can be trained to a higher degree if the task is work-related. Having them trained for obedience is the subject of debates as these dogs can be a bit too aggressive even if properly trained. Therefore, early age socialization and training are very important to make them happy and mentally healthy adults.

Health

The young Treeing Feist dog breed can acquire or develop minor health problems ranging from various allergies, demodectic mange, and dental problems. Also, these dogs are prone to luxating patellas.

Exercise

The Treeing Feist is a breed that lives to hunt. When not on a hunting trip, these dogs should have long walks or jog sessions. In conclusion, these dogs are perfect for active persons with children with whom they can run freely.
