Introduction

The Wire-haired Vizsla is one of two coat varieties of the Hungarian Vizsla. This specific variety is commonly bred in Europe and rarely seen in North America.

History

The Wire-haired Vizsla is among the oldest dog breeds still existing today. They can trace back their origin as far back as 1,000 years ago where they were used as hunting dogs all across the Central European region. Their native country is Hungary and compared to the other variety of Vizsla dogs, the Wire-haired Hungarian Pointing dog is relatively less aggressive less vocal.

Personality

Wire-haired Vizsla dogs share similar traits and behavior with the Smooth-haired variety. Both types of this dog breed are impressive hunters with an even-tempered disposition. The two coat varieties share the same level of liveliness and an innately good-natured. These dogs are gentle and affectionate when at home and around family. They are also known to be very sensitive to the harshness of the human voice. This specific variety is known to be less vocal and less aggressive than the Smooth-haired Vizsla.

Bred For

The Wire-haired Vizsla dogs were developed by Hungary’s Magyar tribe. These dogs were used as versatile hunters that can go after waterfowls and upland game types of animals. They are retrievers, pointers and bird hunting dogs. Today, wire-haired Vizsla dogs are still used in hunting but are gradually making a name for themselves as athletes in obedience, agility and watchdog trials.

Environment

The Wire-haired Vizsla should not be kept as apartment dogs. They are very active and can get very loud! The ideal home setting for these dogs is a rural home with an average-sized yard for them to move about.

Grooming

The two-coat variety of Vizsla dogs are very easy to groom. Their coats little attention and can be at its peak condition with minimal efforts. These are dogs that shed hair in the average amount.

Training

The Wire-haired Vizsla dog breed is known to be very intelligent and very sensitive. Having them well trained and house crate trained is doable as long as a positive, firm and consistent training approach is done.

Health

The Hungarian Wire-haired Vizsla is very healthy. The only medical condition that is known to affect this breed is the common canine problem of hip dysplasia.

Exercise

The Wire-haired Vizsla demands vigorous exercise as they are naturally energetic and have impressively high stamina. Long brisk walks or jogging should be done every day.
