One of three varieties of the Ibizan Hound dog breed, the Wirehaired Ibizan Hound are those dogs with coats that are wirehaired measuring 1 to 3 inches long.

History

Originating from the island of Ibiza in the southern coastal region of Spain, Wirehaired Ibizan Hound dogs were used as a hunter of small games. Specifically, these dogs were used to hunt rabbits by the island settlers of this Spanish coastal area. These are not the ancient hounds used in Egyptian antiquity, but rather a recreation of that breed. They are fast hunters and can hunt in both day and night conditions. They also known to be retrievers, hunting and capturing prey, then bringing it back to their masters. Today, they are popular in the sport of lure coursing.

Personality

Active and fast, Wirehaired Ibizan Hound dogs are versatile hunters of small game prey. So versatile that they can adapt to both night and day time hunting conditions. These are ideal family pets as they are highly and easily trainable. They are also very playful, loyal and affectionate around family.

These are dogs that were developed to be hunters that use their keen sight to capture prey. They are also used in the sport of lure coursing.

Environment

Although the Ibizan Hound dog’s ideal home setting is rural areas with a large yard. These hound dogs are known to adapt to apartment life. Just make sure these hound dogs are sufficiently exercised to have them on their best behavior.

They are trainable but tend to be willful if they sense their owners are meek or passive and get bored easily.

The Ibizan Hound dog breed shows no genetic or hereditary medical conditions. They do have allergic problems brought by various medications, chemicals and food.

Exercise

Ibizan Hound dogs are not just active dogs. They are one of the most energetic hound dogs that require lots and lots of vigorous activities. These hounds just do not need long daily walks, they require 2 to 3 lengthy walks in a day!
